From what I have come to learn and experience, branding is a bit like fashion. It’s all about preparing a client for a date with their new customer. It’s about looking good and communicating right. And as we all know, beauty and eloquence in whatever shape or form are what we have always used as individuals to attract a mate.
The prettiest and most humble girls attract a ton of attention, just as the sweetest, charming, smart and ambitious guys attract the most ladies. This is all imbedded within our DNA as humans. Mating is all about attraction and a fight between rivals to win the heart of a mate. Branding is what makes us stand out, what makes the girl of our dreams choose us over a thousand other guys screaming for her attention.
The Red Dress
Picture this, you are single, searching and ready to settle down; you walk into the wedding reception of a close friend of yours. A pretty face greats you and ushers you to your table. You take in a deep breath and sigh, hoping as you walk that you will meet a lady you could call your wife and best friend.
You arrive at your table and are positioned right across three beautiful ladies. Your heart skips a thousand beats. They are all very attractive, but one girl amongst them: the chocolate skinned girl in the red ornamented dress, the one who politely greeted you when you sat, the girl who seemed to understand every joke you told at the table; Eno, as you will come to know her, captures your attention. You want to hear a couple more anecdotes about her personal life, and to watch her smile at you like you are the best thing that ever happened to her.
It’s been only four hours since you met, but something within you lets you know that the lady you met is one amazing young woman.
Effective branding has the power to leave customers feeling like your exemplary self at the wedding. It is what causes brands to stand out from amongst many other young single ladies (brands). It’s crafting a unique identity that causes potential clients to choose a brand whenever they are “ready to settle down.” The question is: are many brands preparing themselves to meet their men at this wedding reception (market place). Or are they leaving home unkempt, and with the wrong social attitude; simply put, are they throwing out mediocre visuals, messaging and more, to potential clients thereby losing out to their competitors. Does their name like Eno, evoke any passion in the hearts of clients whenever it is mentioned? The soul of a company is it’s mission, vision and values….the body of the company, that is, what clients see, touch and smell however, is beautified and maintained by this jargon called branding. Hence if your branding is poor, even a company that has a great mission would be sick and ugly, as they are unable to convey their message adequately to the world.
Think about this, every thing your potential client interacts with was designed by us the designers: from packaging, to architecture, logos and business cards. This means if we screw up, you screw up and if you accept mediocre work because you feel you are a startup, or aren’t a visual savvy company, it will go a long way to affect you. No one respects the person who walks into a meeting unkempt. They may listen to them if options are little but when the “well-dressed” person walks in, all will ignore the unkempt brand. In other words people won’t take you seriously if your branding is poor in quality and taste.
